This is hard to explain without being confusing. My daughters shared a phone for the past few years. I added a line to my account and got 2 new phones so they could have their own. I backed up the old phone and restored the back up onto both new phones. After restoring, I changed one of the new phones to the new iCloud account everywhere on the phone. Now when I receive a text from either phone it goes to the same conversation window and changes the contact name at the top of the screen to the name of most recent sender. I have deleted all contacts for them from my phone and it still does it. I went by the apple store today and they told me I couldnt restore the same backup on 2 phones. So I erased one phone and set it up as a new phone and it still does the same thing. What the hell?

Sounds like you got two email addresses associated with one icloud account so imessage thinks they are both one account. Just start fresh with a new email/icloud account for one phone and let the other phone continue with the old accounts.

Tried that. It’s like there is a digital signature hidden somewhere.

You have completely erased everything on the phone and started with a new fresh email account not associated with anything yet and it still does it?

Sounds like it is the phone number causing issue in imessage then. You will probably have to talk to Apple about that one or request a new number from your provider.

they both had icloud accounts already. So the old phone used daughter 1's icloud account (D1). That backup is restored onto D1's new phone.

Daughter 2 (D2)'s new phone has been wiped clean. She is signed in with her existing icloud account. This account was not associated with the old phone or backup.

Both phones go to the same text window on my phone. Even with imessage turned off on all 3 phones.

edit - with imessage off it works

How did they share one phone with two different icloud accounts?

eta: go to settings, messages, send & receive and see which accounts they are sending from. Do it from both phones. Sounds like there is a common email address being used.

The phone was using D1 account. They both use their own iCloud account to message their friends on iPads.

In the message settings, it has their own phone number and their own iCloud email. There is no eveidence of multiple accounts on either phone that I can find.

Interesting. Thanks for the links. Guess I’ll wait for the fix.

uh, read the next entry down in that linked article...

Edit: The fix is to have a separate AppleID for each phone.

Signing out of the accounts alone didn't fix it because you'd already borked things by sharing IDs in the first place. The fix has been documented here already. You choose to ignore it, you live with the problem.

That’s not my issue. They never shared iCloud accounts.
