anyone have any experience with these or other brands?

weBoost

this trucker one seems to be the way to go: LINK

I work from "home," and there are some camping spots where I like to set up for several days, to get away. But my two favorites have spotty cell service (at best). I really need internet more than voice--mainly to receive and send emails and attachments.

There's one spot where I can drive a mile or so up the road and get full 4G but have nothing at the actual campsite.

Similar situation with my favorite beach camping spot, except it's more in and out. I'll have great signal for 10 minutes and then nothing.

So i feel like a booster might actually work for me.

These suckers are expensive, but an easy business deduction. Plus there's a 30-day no-questions guaranty.

TIA.

I researched the weboost a little bit. It seems to be designed to bring good reception right outside of your building that has poor reception inside via two devices connected by coax. I don't believe it will amplify a signal that is already weak outside of your building.

Well that blows. The Amazon reviews I've read on the trucker one seem a little more positive than that re boosting weak signal on the road.

I'm gonna bite bullet and if it sucks just use the 30 days.

Eta: did it. Taking it to Cape San Blas (St Joe Peninsula SP) and installing on truck or truck camper. Will report back. Hopefully from campsite....

Let us know how the install is and how it works. I've had a few clients asking about it. Have never had any good, cost effective solutions for this in the past.

Update:

the booster worked well. Without it, my phone would go from decent 4G to total crap 3G (which is always crap now), to 1X, to cell only, to nothing, fairly randomly.

I did a test, and every time I plugged the booster in, I would get 4G. I was able to stream the UGA-USC game perfectly and watched Netflix movies.

Gonna keep, probably. I think the bigger test will be my mountain camping spot, because it got ZERO anything down the mountain. I want to drive up and see where i start getting signal without it, and then drive back down until it goes out and try to booster all the way down.

I haven't installed it anywhere yet. I stuck the outside antenna in the brace of the satellite dish on the roof of the truck camper (it has a hatch above the cabover bed so easy access) and placed the indoor antenna 2 feet from the dining room table so it was far from the outdoor antenna. But the ideal distance from where I could leave my phone, charging and turn on the hotspot.

I put the booster in a cabinet that has a 12v outlet.

You have to keep the antennas as far away as possible from each other or else they interfere w one another (6ft + is ideal). "oscillation" it's called.

I probably won't do a permanent install. Need to figure out how to rig it on my cars/trucks for easy removal.

I'm driving up to mtns for that test next week.

Just an update on mine. Got it installed this morning. Went from no reception inside camp to 3-4 bars of 3G. Was only able to get 1-2 bars of 3G outside camp depending on where you stand.

Yeah I think the "trucker" model I got is a different beast. It seems to do an awesome job bringing in signal from towers and it runs on 12V.

The drawback is your phone needs to be between 18 and 36 inches from the internal antenna.

So that wouldn't be great for a camp unless it was an off the grid type.

For my purposes it's perfect because I really don't talk on phone and if I do I don't mind staying put at the dining room table, because that's where I work usually when on the road. And it's easy to leave the phone there to create a hot spot with enough range to sit outside of the camper and work on laptop or stream etc. And easy to stream in bed.

$500 is steep but it allows me to keep up with clients on the road, which paid for itself in one trip.
