I just got a new Samsung remote. However, I am struggling to control the volume on my older Vizio soundbar with the Samsung remote. I know it is possible because my old remote still controls the soundbar. I talked to Samsung, and they told me to talk to Vizio. Do you have any ideas? Thanks.

Is HDMI CEC enabled?

Do you need to run Vizio codes through your Samsung remote?

It is optical. I think that is how I did it originally, but no one seems to want to help at Vizio or Samsung.

HDMI CEC is what allows bidirectional communication for the TV to tell the soundbar to turn the volume up, essentially. Check and see if the soundbar and the HDMI port on your TV supports it; I think it's usually only one of the HDMI ports on many TVs that do, not all. I don't think optical does bidirectional commo.

The soundbar is real old and doesn’t have a hdmi port. The old Samsung remote still works and controls the sound bar. That remote is cracked so I wanted to replace it.

The sound bar uses ir to control the volume is my guess.

You need to get the samsung remote to also broadcast in ir for your sound bar.

It's likely similar to what you have to do to get your samsung remote to control the Sonos play bar which is hooked up via optical as well and you need to switch the Samsung control to use ir to control it.

Just as an aside you will want to make sure the actual TV speakers are set to zero when using the sound bar.
