I bought a Harmony Hub + Companion Remote for my system. It seems to work except for the annoyance of my TV. Everything is inside a media closet along with the Harmony Hub, which seems to work fine with the components. However, I can’t get it to control my TV. So I have to manually turn my TV on with a separate remote.

I don’t want to run the IR extender outside the closet as it would be a long run and there’s no good place for it. I’ve also tried to set up my AVR/TV for HDMI control, but that doesn’t seem to work (ie turn on/off with the AVR).

I have a Vizio TV (IR), DTV Box (RF), AVR (IR), FireCube (BT), and Blu-ray Player (IR).

If I could figure out how to tie the TV to the AVR, it would solve my issues. However, I’m not a big fan of the Companion remote, but bonus that I already have it. TV is a Vizio PQ and AVR is an Onkyo.

I’m not sure how this remote works but I know with the harmony ultimate one you can go in the settings and set it as rf or ir

Can’t remember if it’s device settings or the scene / mode

I need both.

I need an IR blast for the TV, then RF to communicate with the hub.

The hub accomplishes this with an IR blaster. I just can’t really get it to my TV, so I’d like to be able to do it with the remote (or through HDMI)

The remote should have IR unless you don’t have the remote and you are using your phone?

The basic Logitech remote with the hub is Bluetooth only.

Upgrade your remote to The Harmony Ultimate One
It has IR and hub communication. You can. Use the app to edit which devices get which signals- you can have each mini blaster port separate, together, together with the main hub OR remote-only (there is no way to send the same command via remote IR and hub IR, but it would be kind of weird to need to do that anyway).

I use the Elite with the hub. Overkill for what you're asking to add. But I used it similar to what you were looking for until I made the long IR run through the wall- my tv would turn on from IR from the remote and the TV's smart apps were controlled via the remote's IR while the hub was in a closet working the rest of the devices.

I know you said you didn't want to make the long run, but a cheaper alternative than that remote that would allow phone/tablet control is this BAFX IR over Ethernet converter if, for whatever reason, an Ethernet run (dedicated Hardline, not through a switch) is feasible or already there.

ETA:
OP, does your tv support Wake on LAN and/or have its own remote app that supports turning it on? If so, you may be able to play around with IFTTT and use your Firetv Cube's Alexa to turn it on/off or an app on your phone before picking up the physical remote.

It's less than ideal and I would probably pay for the physical remote, but I could definitely understand thinking $65 on a remote is a bit extreme. Unfortunately, most of your wireless IR extenders with decent reviews that would work 'seamlessly' are around this price already
Downside to the remote (as opposed to running IR to the tv) is that you still can't use the app without the remote, so if that is a big sticking point, it's possible that finding a wireless IR extender with ok reviews may be worth a try, buy it's going to be visible.

Also, I don't know if it's doable in your scenario or not, but those blasters are damn strong. My dad had one mounted just above the door of his media closet, and it could turn the TV on/off from 20-25 feet away. Your mileage may vary, and your tolerance for small visible black boxes may be lower than his.

I have the Harmony One and hub and had the same issue. Finally figured it out after doing a bit of research on the Harmony site. I'm not at home to look at the remote to find exactly what I did, but I think this was it:

From your Harmony remote, press the Menu icon.
Select Settings > Devices > Hub Assignments.
Select the device you would like to control using the remote directly.
Select Advanced Settings, a new dropdown will appear in the selection field.
If you don't see this option your device may not have IR capabilities.
Select the port associated with your device that you would like to use.
Remember to sync your remote after making any changes.

Again I'm not sure if these are the correct steps but I do remember I had the same exact problem. Thinking about it, there was a setting on the remote that I went to, that enabled me to tell the remote what to use for the devices, IR, Hub, or both. I set the TV to IR only. Works like a champ.

If you haven't figured it out by this evening, I'll look into it when I get home and report back the right steps to achieve it.

This should work unless his remote doesn't have IR which doesn't make sense they make these to control your tv.

I just could not remember the steps I do not have the program on my computer the remote is my in-laws.

Again, the most basic companion remote is Bluetooth only. The idea was to make a remote that didn't require LOS to your devices, allowed cellphone/tablet control, and be inexpensive with a battery that lasts about a year. To do all this and remain thin/light, they sacrificed IR on the cheapest model, making it a relatively poor solution for media closets that have a TV far away if HDMI-CEC isn't going to work as above.
The blaster will reach across a standard room without difficulty if you have anywhere to place it. If you don't. You're basically forced to go up to their more expensive remote.

There are a handful of new products from other companies just coming out, but until the last two years or so, to get IR + RF was available only from Logitech without having to go through a dealer. And getting a URC remote and programming it through the dealer is going to start around $300. The hub + upgraded remote is still way cheaper and reliable (with a ton more flexibility) than any other consumer-oriented option.

That’s a terrible idea but I guess it should work with newer TVs my 4yo Samsung has Bluetooth and I’m sure my new one does too

Sorry. The remote does not Bluetooth to the tv. It Bluetooths to the hub which emits IR.
