Similar thing happened with my parents a decade ago. All Best Buy did was setup a new partition on the hard drive (less than half was used as parents basically read news/email) and installed a new copy of Windows on the new partition. The Geek Squad then copied some individual files, like friends/family pictures, group/folder by group/folder.

Her fingers are all messed up with rheumatoid arthritis and after she learned how much different reality and expectations are for touchscreens she lost interest in pads and touch PC's. At her age she's just not gonna learn quickly, well, nor satisfactorily. The fingers prevent from smart phones due to small icons (her fingertips aren't where she points anymore).

Best bet is probably to stick with what they know. Just go cheap and easily replaceable. Considering the stuff they're going through they'll be more careful in the future. Remind them periodically, embarrassingly if need be, and they'll not be repeat scammed.

In my parents case that 50cent Campbells Soup coupon from a sketchy site cost them a $1500 PC, a call from MicroSoft "Bob" who sounded suspiciously like he was based in New Delhi cost them a 2nd time (the Geek Squad solution). After that they didn't fall for scams again, even stopped opening fwdfwdfwd from their also elderly friends.
