Software update for MacBook Pro

I have an older MacBook Pro (2010 model) and it seems I need to update the operating system to get it running properly. I have read some not so positive reviews of doing this update. Anybody have any experience with this? Any pointers to make it go smoothly to where I don't lose any of my data on my hard drive? Thanks.

That shouldn't need to be done. How's your free hard drive space? Can you add more RAM? Ever run permissions repair?
