Simplest Way to Backup Computer Files?

What would be the absolute simplest way to backup and transfer laptop files?
I want to transfer about 225GB-300GB of laptop files onto a PC for backup.
I'm thinking I'll just buy a 128GB USB flash drive for $15 or $30 dollars, copy the files onto the drive, and transfer them to the PC in two or three passes.
Is using an external hard drive any harder than using a flash drive to backup files? If not, I'd be open to that, too.
If anyone knows of a simpler, less expensive way, please to let me know.

A 500GB hard drive is pretty cheap.

If all you want to do is copy files from a laptop to a desktop, you can just share a folder and copy the files without needing another drive as an intermediary.
I wouldn't really consider that to be a "backup" though. Two is one and one is none. For important files I try to keep at least two copies locally (on different hardware) and at least one copy off site.
