I'll admit this is probably a question with an easy solution that I'm just overlooking, but I can't figure it out.

My primary email is a pop server with Earthlink. In the past I've had one email app on my phone for it, and then use Gmail for my Gmail account.

I decided I wanted to have only one email app, so I set up the Earthlink account in Gmail so that it downloads the messages but leaves them on the server. I then have the Outlook client on my primary PC set to remove messages from the server when they get downloaded there.

The problem is, once those messages are removed from the server, when Gmail syncs messages, the emails disappear from the Gmail app inbox. They aren't in trash, they aren't anywhere, it's like they are just gone.

Is there any way to change this? I know I could just not sync the app, but then I'd never be able to check email on my phone.

You can't use IMAP settings with Earthlink?

I believe you can, but you have to get something changed in your email settings at the ISP level. By default all earthlink domains (earthlink.net, mindspring.com, etc.) are set as pop servers.

I'd say it sounds like you are using IMAP. Outlook being set up as POP3 and Gmail being IMAP fits the behavior your seeing. Are you sure your Gmail app is using POP3 for this account?

The Gmail settings are set to connect to the pop email server (pop.mindspring.com) and is set to leave the mail on the server, which it does.

But I agree that once the mail is removed from the server by Outlook, Gmail app treats it as imap. I just can't find a setting to change that behavior.
