Satellite internet question.

I've never had a need to look into satellite internet service but my folks are doing so because they have been stuck with a miserable CenturyLink 1.5mb connection for years and no hope of a better offer in the foreseeable future.
They called Exede and were told that new accounts were not being accepted in their area at this time.
Out of curiosity, why would there be geographical restrictions for a service offered by satellite? I feel like I should know why this would be the case but I do not.

Louisiana.
I thought everyone accessed a satellite the same way.
Are there distinct beams or something and they cap how many customers access individual beams?
I guess I always assumed satellites just threw down on big signal and dishes just access it.

Satellite is GARBAGE. Use only as a last resort.

satellite is a star network, so they probably dont want to overload the central point since it performs all routing functions.
thats the only reason i can think of. i dont know much about it

quote:That's how satellite TV works because it's just a one-way broadcast. An unlimited number of receivers can pick it up. Internet is necessarily two-way, so they don't want to overload the satellite with too many signals from incoming dishes.

I have Exede as there are no providers where I live. Their new Freedom package is OK. Unlimited data (Actually limit is 150gb but they don't shut you down) but it is slow. I usually get anywhere from 8-16gb down. Terrible especially for the price. But when you have no choice, you have no choice.

A geosynchronous orbit is over 22k miles up. That is a looonnggg ping. I'd stick with the 1.5mb connection any day or possibly look into a cellular alternative.
