I was once told here that remotes are old outdated technology and you should be using voice control for everything.
URC has some good remotes

Do URC remotes still require a programmer?

Pure IR?
I would probably buy a used Harmony 650, 665, or 750 on Amazon and use it til the wheels fall off

Most do, but the most basic one can be programmed on the remote. Believe it’s the MX-450.

Just get an IR eye and use the remote you have?

I use the Harmony Hub, and have been very happy with it...depends on how many devices you're controlling and their location. My setup has Hub in credenza which blasts control to all components inside, and an IR repeater on top for display (comes with Hub). I currently only have an AV Receiver and Apple TV in the credenza, but used to have more components in the system and it handled all of them with no issues. Macro "power on" functions are easy to get setup, global power off as well, and "remote" is actually your phone.
