Recommend where to buy a new laptop for work/gaming

I play a lot of old Civ and Aoe games when I do play. No MMORPGs. Just got Beyond Earth and it won't play on my current laptop, and civ 5 runs slow.
It's just time for an upgrade.
Don't want to spend too much but want something that is good for streaming, surfing the web, writing, gaming and just in general multiuse pc. I hardly ever use my desktop and it's outdated anyhow.
Will the newer laptops even play older games? Like from the 2000 era?
I'd like a 15" + screen

NewEgg has a refurb Lenovo laptop on sale right now for $269 with an i5 processor, 8 gigs of memory, SSD and Win7 professional. Best bargain I've seen in a long time.

Higher priced, but it'll do everything very well, particularly gaming: LINK
Careful with the refurbished Lenovos. Most of the ones I'm seeing are using Sandy Bridge or earlier generation. That wouldn't be a big deal if it weren't for the graphics. You can get by with integrated graphics, only because Intel has made significant strides in GPU performance over the past several years, and you'll likely find your most demanding games unplayable on Intel HD 3000 or 4000. Even in modern mobile iGPUs, games like Civ 5 are gonna struggle a little, but are playable at lowest settings and slightly reduced resolution. That's why I recommended the PC above, with a low-end dedicated GPU that's still at least twice as fast as an integrated GPU. But you didn't mention a solid budget.
For something more modest but still very capable, this Acer is solid. LINK Biggest sacrifice is the SSD, which you can buy anytime (and should).
Lower than that, you're looking at integrated graphics, and I'd recommend Something with an i5-6200U or better.

I bought one of these around the end of last year. It's about $800. It comes with a 256gb SSD, but it does have an extra slot to put a standard laptop hard drive in it.
It runs Fallout 4 ok.

Here's a LINK to the Lenovo. Sale ends in 23 hours.
Would not run Civ 5 well, if at all.

What's your opinion on MS SurfaceBook?

Sexy, powerful, and expensive. It would be tough for me personally to justify the price of it or the SP4 because I work from home and don't travel often, nor am I much of a tablet user.

Um... worse and more expensive than the one I linked. And older.

That acer looks good.
Upper end of my price range is about 700$
But I'd rather spend around 500-600$
Will it run the latest Civ though? Beyond earth?

Yeah, at medium or low settings, and possibly bumping the resolution a little below native, would probably get you 30+ fps. It's about the minimum GPU I'd recommend. The APU graphics in the HP you linked would perform even worse.
If you can stomach spending the top of your budget, I came across this other Newegg-Exclusive Acer with a 950M and an SSD for $699. It would be significantly better than the other Acer. LINK
Most synthetic benchmarks show the 950M nearly twice as fast as the 940M. It would definitely run civ 5 BE at native res (1080p) and medium settings quite well. Something to consider.

The only thing that worries me is some of the reviews.
How hard would it be to upgrade the batteries in that one?

Oh, I never read newegg reviews for computers. They are worthless. However, I did go back and take a look. The only valid complaint I saw was the wifi. Multiple people took issue with the Wifi signal. I would not be surprised if it's being shipped with outdated drivers that are not compatible with Windows 10. These laptops were made prior to Windows 10's release but are all being upgraded to Windows 10. Personally, because the price/performance is so good, I'd just replace the wifi card and antennas myself if necessary, but I understand that it's not something most people would do. I'd still take my chances on it being driver-related and then just return the laptop if it's bad enough.
Why are you asking about the battery? Appears to have long battery life. Only one review mentioned short battery, while several others said the opposite.

That's probably the one I'll get then. Any reccomendations on what to get with it?

Nothing I can think of that you either probably haven't considered or don't already have.
