I am good with technology but I just don't keep up with what is out there and what each laptops capabilities are. All I use the laptop for is to VPN into my work computer. So I don't need top of line but also need something that wont slow up my workflow. Work computer has some programs I use regularly and then all your adobe and excel stuff as well. Would like to stay under $1,000 if possible. TIA

After talking with a sales guy at MicroCenter I think I am going to go with the new ASUS VivoBook R564JA-UH51T. What do you think of that selection?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but if 100% of the work you are doing is through your VPN and not on the device in your hands, wouldn't, literally, any device that ran an operating system compatible with the VPN software and had access to the internet work exactly the same as any other?

I mean, maybe just focus on cost and battery life?

Yeah I think you can achieve this with a $200 Chromebook or $400 Walmart Windows PC.

Lenovo X1 Carbon (7th gen) 2019

$1K for a 2-year-old laptop with a 2.5-year-old 8th gen i5 (we're just getting into gen 11), 8GB RAM, 256GB PCIe SSD, Intel UHD Graphics, and a 60Hz screen? Yikes...what am I missing to justify this price? There's a thumbnail for a Gateway Creator Series on that page that comes with an Nvidia 1650, Ryzen 5 4600H (one-year-old) and appears to have the same rest of specs for $600. Not necessarily recommending it, but to give you an idea of how over-priced that Lenovo is given its components.

Assuming I'm right and your computing needs are functionally nil, I would keep the $1k budget, but I would spend half of it on a decent 34" 3440x1440 ultrawide monitor, a decent keyboard and mouse, and a budget but decent docking station (like so: LINK ).

Create an actual workspace with that budget. Don't blow a thousand dollars on a glorified net terminal.
