Hi everyone,
In the market for a new laptop and looking for suggestions. My wife has a MacBook Air for work (2015 model) that I really like, but I know they are considered overpriced by some.

I'm not a heavy user as mostly it will be used for word processing, powerpoint, web browsing, and basic consumption.

I was reading the reviews not he latest MacBook Air and they seem to be somewhat mixed - based not he Mac bias of the author. I really enjoy the experience on the 2015, particularly the Trackpad.

$1200 plus tax is a little bit of a tough pill to swallow at first glance. Is that the consensus?

Are their options that are a little less expensive that are worth checking out? Is the 2017 MacBook Air (which I know has a lesser display, thicker bezel) a complete non starter? I have also read some reviews that say the older models are big faster in that they aren't trying to push such great graphics on a lower powered device.

So far, looking at 2018 Air, 2017 Air (much cheaper obviously), Surface Laptop, and Dell XPS.

Again, I don't need the latest technology, just something that will serve me for several years. Nothing heavy, I am an engineer, but aside from viewing PDF's, don't draw in CAD anymore.

Microsoft Surface laptops are awesome.

I use a 2017 lenovo carbon x1 as my daily and it's another great laptop.

I can't use MacOS with my apps unless I run W10 virtual and to me that's a waste of time.

Thanks, how’s the trackpad?

I have a clunky dell laptop that work gives me that’s not very portable and I essentially have to take a mouse to be productive at all.

On the Surface? It's good. Thing that really surprises me is how light and thin it is.

Yeah, my only experience with a trackpad is my clunky dell that’s basically just a mouse. The air is awesome. Was hoping for similar experience with surface.

dumb question - but will something like that start up immediately or does it have a boot process?

It’s got a ssd so I’m guessing the startup is pretty instant

A MacBook Air would serve you well I believe.

I’m a web developer and I use a 2017 MacBook Pro. OS X is the big selling point of Macs along with the trackpad. Both are a joy to use and the tight hardware integration is what separates it from something like Windows. Apple doesn’t use the latest and greatest in hardware specs but OS X is optimized for your machine which makes specs less relevant.

So, even with the newer Airs out there, the 2017 isn't a dinosaur?

Again, it seems to be more than capable for my use - but hate to buy something that is obsolete by this time next year.

Sweet, how long is it on sale? Interested in your feedback, may cruise over to Best Buy shortly and peruse the options.

ETA: where did you purchase from? I see it only on the Samsung link you posted

Liking it so far. Really quick with a beautiful screen and the 2-1 with a touch screen is pretty cool

How does it feel on portability? Is it something that you wouldn't mind carrying to another room if you're working on something?

Does the keyboard feel integrated or is it an afterthought?

ETA: How is it to type on?

Portability is awesome. I’ve have two kids climbing all over me and switch it from laptop w keyboard to tablet in a flash. It’s like 4 lbs so easy to vary around. Keyboard is carry smooth. Most of laptops I tried at Best Buy had a clunky arse keyboard but this one is really nice.

Still getting use to tablet mode but I think I’m really gonna like it.

Thanks for feedback. That’s my main criteria. Want a decent laptop, but I don’t want anything clunky

Can anyone provide feedback on this? obviously not the newest, but spec wise it seems pretty decent - thoughts at that price?
