I wanna get a 4TB external portable HDD just to hold movies for my Plex server.

Any cons of having it plugged into my desktop 24/7?

Nope.

It's just like a normal drive in a PC, it won't spin unless it's being used

That's largely what those big externals are for now - folks dumping all their media on them for Plex servers (and some folks are doing their own local backups).

The only thing I'll say is - just be a little more aware of what you're buying, how sensitive the data on it (obviously media no problem), you don't want to have the only copy of something on it, etc.

And you can't treat them quite as roughly as a Shield or Roku - so maintain awareness of electromagnetic sources near the drive - mainly large speakers. These modern drives are so much more durable/shielded in that regard compared to just 10 - 15 years ago that it almost doesn't warrant mentioning, but I didn't want to half-arse the advice.

That depends on the energy saving settings. Many drives these days default to not powering down as spinning creates very little wear but starting up and stopping over and over does result in some wear and tear.

Does it have to be portable? Have you considered NAS?

Isn't that a lot more expensive?

No. It only gets a lot more expensive if you start looking for specific professional level features or redundancy.

I got a 4TB WD MyCloud for $150.

I'd hardly call that a NAS.

It's an external hard drive you can plug into a router

Pitch a fit all you want. It is a NAS running on a fully functional debian OS. You can SSH and do whatever you want. There are even open source firmware out there if you want more powerful functionality.

For the home user, it does everything you need without going open source firmware including DLNA server (twonky) and remote backup synchronization.
