Pixel 2/Google Voice setting question

My Pixel 2 keyboard updated recently with some supposed enhanced voice input functionality. However, whenever I hit the microphone button, it seems to no longer stop audio apps (e.g. a podcast that is currently playing), and thus the keyboard text to be sent fills up with whatever the podcast is saying. Does anyone know how to change this setting back (or if it can be changed at all)? It greatly diminishes the utility of voice input, so I have to imagine it can be set properly. TIA
