So, I just picked up the VSX-90 and got it all set up. I have a basic 5.1 set up with in ceiling speakers in the living room and zone 2 set to a pair of speakers on my back patio.

Everything is working fine, except that I cannot get sound from my DirecTV box to zone 2. Currently I do not have a TV on the patio, but eventually will. This set up will mainly be used to mirror whats on in the living room (mainly for football games).

Zone 2 works with everything I have tried, bluetooth, tuner and Pandora from receiver. So I know the speakers are set up correctly.

Does this have anything to do with with digital in to analog out on zone 2? Everything right now is connected by HDMI.

I'm not sure if I have missed a setting somewhere or what. Or if I need to connect an optical or component cable from the sat box to receiver as well. Any ideas?

Edit to Update:

So I figured it out. I'll leave this here in case it helps someone else. Maybe this is common knowledge maybe not.

I connected component cables from my sat box to the receiver and that worked. Apparently zone 2 needs an analog signal. Who knew.....

Does the VSX-90 have Bluetooth built in to that baby? I have the VSX-50 (slightly older model) and wondering if I can put a Bluetooth transmitter on my Zone 2 outputs and then put a Bluetooth speaker on my back deck and get tv audio?

For football games while I'm downing cold ones.

DD, you should just do option 2 from your original thread asking for a solution. Or best yet run the wires.

I believe the answer is, yes. I think Zone 2 will only output analog signals. So you could enable zone 2, then switch the zone 2 signal to Radio for example.

I haven't found a way to get Zone 2 to play my TVs sound, yet...

I just hooked up audio component cables from my Directv box to the receiver and that sent my TV sound to my outdoor speakers. Now all I have to do is run an HDMI cable outside and turn on the HDZONE to mirror what is on inside.

Yes. In addition to running HDMI from your Direct TV receiver to you Pioneer receiver also run the R/W composite cables from the back of the DTV receiver to the Pioneer. That should work. I did the same with my Denon receiver and it worked, will look for the link that showed me how to do so. I also hooked my Roku the same way.

Just wanted to say I have the exact same set up and thought this receiver was awesome... Came here to answer your question but saw you got it.

Enjoy!

Limitations of Multizone Setups

Remember what I was saying above about how manufacturers aren’t always up-front about the limitations of multizone? The primary limitation, which is true for the vast majority of receivers from any brand (not just Denon!) is that Zone 2 is ANALOG ONLY!!. This means your cable box hooked up with optical audio, your PS3 hooked up with HDMI, etc. will NOT be output to Zone 2! This unpublicized factoid, typically only disclosed in the fine print somewhere deep in the manual, comes as a shock to most consumers who wonder why they get silence when they try to turn on their Zone 2 speakers.

All is not lost, however. All you need to do is, for any source which you would like to output to Zone 2, just “double up” your connection by running a second set of analog RCA cables (red/white) from the analog outs of your source to the corresponding input on the back of the Denon.

For example, let’s say you want to set it up so you can hear the football game on the deck using your patio speakers. Your cable box is hooked up to the “TV/CBL” input with HDMI. To get the Zone 2 speakers to work, you just have to run a pair of stereo RCA cables from the red/white output on the back of the cable box to the corresponding inputs labeled “TV/CBL” on the back of the Denon.

Now, when you select “TV/CBL” as the Zone 2 source, the Denon will be able to take the audio as it will automatically grab the audio from the analog inputs.
