Everyone mentioning their MP3 player is frustrating as hell. I've tried to find which I had and have yet to figure it out. It had a single "button", which consisted of a silver thing in the middle that could be pushed in 4 directions as well as pushed in. I remember that I was torn between it and the Zune.

I had the Zune 30 as my first MP3 player and later got the Zune 80. It was far superior to the iPod in hardware, sound quality, and interface. And I really liked the computer software as well.
Also bought an hd-DVD player shortly before it lost the war and promptly sold it on craiglist for a minimal loss.

Bought Sony DAT -> lost to cassettes
This isn't true. Sony was only part of the DAT craze...and they were also used for computer backups. Also DAT is digital, cassettes are not.
DAT lost out to digital recorders and computer recording devices.
I own two different DAT machines myself. Staring at one right now.
