I think this is fascinating. He uses software called Helicon Focus and PhotoShop. This is very cleverly done. I'm assuming he took multiple photos at different focal points (with high f/stops; long depths of field) and merged them with the software.

This is focus stacking with a macro lens. They likely used a macro probe, like this:

That's really slick. The sharpness is not "tack sharp", but the great perspectives make up for it.
