Phone deleted all my contacts, I have no idea why or how to get them back

So I've had a Google Nexus 6 for a about 2 months now. All of a sudden this weekend I notice all my contacts have been lost. WTF?
The only thing I can potentially link to it is Google required me to change my email address that I've used to log in to Google accounts to a gmail address (I had been using my original email address which was yahoo). Anyone know anything about this? Is there any way to get them back?

No contacts listed in there either.

Android phones sync automatically with your gmail contact list. Log in to gmail from a computer and import your contacts from your other e-mail account. Your phone will then be populated with the contacts from gmail.
Your contacts are not in the google cloud at this point. You need to put them there by importing your contact list.

I tried to import "contacts" from my yahoo account to my google account but all it imported was email accounts. I don't see phone contacts anywhere in my Yahoo account.

The I think you might be SOL unless you saved your phone contacts to the SD card in the phone. Connect your phone to a computer and take a look at the files stored there. If you do find the contacts, merge them with your google contacts and you'll have e-mail and phone contacts all in one place. If you make changes either on the computer or from the phone, they'll be in the cloud and always available.

Yeah I'll try connecting phone to computer next I guess. I'm not going to lie, I'm pretty f'ing pissed off because I literally did nothing. Just checked my phone and no contacts all of a sudden.
I originally used a Yahoo as my only email account but several years ago youtube required a google login so I created one with my yahoo email. I've been logging into Google with my Yahoo email account. This weekend it prompted me to update the primary email to a gmail account. I can't understand why that would lead to all of my phone contacts being deleted and unrecoverable. That's a pretty massive frick up on Google's part if so, particularly for not offering a warning or method for backup prior if they know this can happen.

no offense, but you really should have a better understanding of how something so critical to you is being stored.
i used to maintain my contacts, etc only through Exchange because that was more secure than some free email account that may or may not be around in a few years.
i honestly cant imagine how you've lasted this long with a pure android phone without embracing google email & services to support it.

Exactly. They make it so easy!

i haven't considered my phone a 'secure storage device' since like 2002 when i bought a nokia 3650 and discovered it would link to my Exchange contacts, calendar & task list.
back then it was a miserable experience to input anything on the phone and being the lazy SOB i am, i wanted nothing to do with redundant contacts or rekeying anything.
over the years i've reluctantly moved to google to support my contacts and at any given time if my phone explodes i really dont lose anything other than a few phone-specific configration settings.
google managing my ebooks, music, photos & video for free was icing on the cake but never really considered that 'mission critical'.

Yeah android has gotten much better with each OS. When I got a new phone 2 weeks ago, all I had to do was sign into my google account and the phone was basically exactly the same as my old phone, minus a few config changes. Apps, contacts, photos and even home screen icon locations were all the same.
Side note: I've been trying out Android N over the last few days and am really loving it so far. They've made some really great UI changes.

Yeah I guess, but I've literally never lost my contacts before. From my first cell phone about 15 years ago to now, I've never lost them, so I was never really aware they could just up and vanish on account of something having to do with my email.

It's been about 2 months. I had an iphone before this and never had an issue. And I'm still not understanding what sense is behind why my contacts were deleted.

Can you sign back in with your yahoo email as you did before? If so, do that and then save to simcard.

This confuses me...
I am under the impression that in order to use ANY android phone a GOOGLE email address (Gmail) had to be entered upon initial set up? Am I incorrect in assuming that?

How did you transfer your contacts from your iPhone to your Android phone? Your contacts should be stored somewhere.
Also, I know you probably tried this already, but you shoukd restart your phone. Your contacts may reappear.

Went back and read this again.
So you've been using a yahoo email log in to access your Google account?
1st, I didn't know that was a thing. I know I can link my yahoo mail to my Gmail acct, but I have to already have a Gmail acct for this to work.
2nd, if what I said above is correct then there must be an "@gmail.com" acct for you floating around in the Googlesphere in which it's likely that all your contacts are linked to. You need to find that email and password and log into your phone with that.

google file recovery apps/programs. There are several that are worth trying.
