Ok I need some help here....

So I hit my google icon on my laptop... it goes to google start page . I click on bar and try to start typing but no letters appear..... I am no whiz at this ... any help would be great TIA.

Can you type in the address bar in explorer?
Have you rebooted in case a driver wasn't loaded at start up? try it in safe mode.
You may want to check device manager and make sure your keyboard hasn't become disabled or lost it's drivers.
Check for hardware conflicts too.
:btw: I had this issue years ago on an old laptop and the problem was the battery was causing mayhem, I removed it and everything worked great.
