Network help - Ubiquiti

I need some help. I’ve got a new build and just had Xfinity internet installed today. I’ve got a surfboard modem connected to a Ubiquiti switch and 3 Ubiquiti wireless access points. Everything seems hooked up correctly but I can’t get the switches to setup through the app. What am I missing here?

You list:
Modem
Switch
WAP
what is being used as your router?

I assumed the switch operated as the router with the WAPs giving me WiFi. What else do I need to buy?

Post model numbers for the ubi gear.

WAP is a U6-Lite-US and switch is USW-Lite-16-POE

I do not believe this is correct.
In the settings on your controller, you should have an option to enable/disable DHCP. But it requires a USG or USG-Pro (or UDM/UDMP but they are their own controllers) to enable this feature.
You need a router, not necessarily wireless. Any one will do. Or you need to buy a USG, USGP, UDM, or UDMP.
If you have a router; it will be your DHCP server (not the Unifi controller). I have never attempted what you are attempting, so maybe you can find a way to do it, but you won’t have a firewall or DHCP available to you if you do get it to work.
ETA- what I mean by “you need a router” is that you can use your old link linksys/net gear/airport/etc to get this working today since I doubt you have access to unifi equipment at a store/delivery today. The ideal solution is one of the four I listed, but will take more time to get. You can always add that component later if you want to get the system up and running today. I used a Mikrotik router with a dumb switch and Unifi AP for a while.

Deleted.
Hopefuldoc said same thing with more explanation. I agree with what he said.

Can I use a different router temporarily? Nighthawk or whatever?

Yep. Just plug the modem into the WAN port on the Nighthawk and then any of the nighthawk’s 4 ports into the dedicated Uplink port on your Unifi switch if it exists. If it doesn’t, and port will do. I don’t know your model that well and am being a little lazy here but can look it up if you need help.
From there, everything else gets set up in the app.
You probably should go into the nighthawk and disable its wifi radio or at least hide the ssid so as to not create interference or confuse yourself, albeit (seemingly) temporary.

So I’ve got the USG plugged in between the modem and switch. Still no internet from the WAPs. What now?
Posted on 7/26/21 at 5:28 pm to HurricaneDunc
have you logged in and provisioned the WAPs? It's not hard but not exactly plug n play

Can this be done with an iPhone? Or do I need a PC?
Posted on 7/26/21 at 6:05 pm to Vrai
I setup the WAPs through the app, logged into the router through a browser and it tells me trouble connecting to internet and that I need to download a controller
Posted on 7/26/21 at 6:44 pm to HurricaneDunc
Yes you need to setup a controller on a computer. You only need it for settings this up then can turn it off, unless you need to change a setting in your network.

Appreciate all the help so far. It seems I’m up and running with internet, although the speed is quite slower than advertised from Xfinity. It looks like the WAPs are setup as standalone devices in the controller’s view so anything connected to them it thinks is a wired connection. Not sure if that matters or not. Do I need to reset them?
Posted on 7/27/21 at 10:03 am to HurricaneDunc
You can try resetting them but make sure the WAPs and the USG are all updated with the latest firmware, etc. What speed are you getting? My controller shows my APs as separate devices, but anything connected to them shows wireless

I thought you could use their cloud based controller
Posted on 7/28/21 at 7:25 am to CarRamrod
Don't think you can use the cloud based controller until after initial set up. Need internet access.
I wouldn't trust them keeping my network setting son their cloud after they got hacked. They may have fixed the exploit or however it happened but still wouldn't trust them.

JK but i wouldnt worry about it that much. Hackers are going for 1000s of CC numbers not one.
