Are you saying you're not a sub man meaning you don't like them? They fill out the sound field and without a sub it's crazy how much you're leaving on the table.

Ended of doing 5 Klipsch 5800 CII for my downstairs and a Klipsch Pro 1000SW in wall. Outside on my back porch I did 4 Paradigm P80-RX Outdoor Weatherproof In-ceiling Speakers.

I’m thinking about going with the Denon AVR-X6700H to power my two zones downstairs and when I’m ready to finish my theater room switch the upstairs and living room down stairs to it and buy a cheap receiver to power my 4 speakers outside.

you could have saved major coin and gone with Micca's. Some one recommended them to me on here and i did a bunch of research. yea the $300 Klipsch speaker gets better reviews but not by much and each 8" Micca is 40 dollars. I set up my all in ceiling 7.1/5.1.2 got my living room. It just wasnt set up to be able to put any ear level speakers so i had to make some sacrifices.

go at least 9.2 but probably wire for 11.2. As those additional formats become more popular and common you may be wishing down the road you'd have wired for them.

I'd much rather $2000-4000/5.1 than $2000-4000/11.2.
You're not wrong that Atmos is becoming more popular and (new format) multichannel scenes are becoming more common, but I'm many times happier with my 5.2 system where I spent money on speakers and the amp to my much more discreet 5.4.1 system with some very basic contractor-grade in-ceilings and some crummy Bose Acoustimass satellites. The two things I like in the whole system are the 7-series b&w center and my sub which make it tolerable. These two upgrades bought me credibility with the wife- she didn't think what we had was bad or unpleasant. As soon as the upgrades went in she commented for a week or more each time how much better it sounded.

So in the Atmos version of guardians of the galaxy, for example, it's cool to hear my 5.4.1 have overhead noise during select scenes from the film, but I'd much rather the significantly better main 3 speakers for the other 95% of the movie. You'll see a few scenes in most blockbusters to show off the cool tech for the places that have it, but there's just so much sound coming from the front 3 speakers and sub, and I don't think that's changing any time soon

If I were running wires, I'd wire for the extra channels. But I'd spend the money on LCR and S before surrounds and Atmos/extras a hundred times over.
