Hey guys,
Anybody have any strong feelings regarding network attached storage? I’m looking at what I guess are the two main consumer players, synology and qnap. I’m planning on doing just two bays and want to use Plex. I’ve been looking at the Synology ds218+, but have read/heard some good things about qnap. Already searched without too much info found. Thanks

I’m a Synology fan. It is my home storage as well as my surveillance system. I do not know anything about qnap so I can’t help you there. However the synology can to do a whole lot more than just network storage.

I have used a bunch of Synology's boxes for clients. Have a friend who uses QNAPs.

I have had so many successful installs with Synology, that I can't make myself try QNAP.

Piggy backing off this topic some, If I use plex pass with the Live DVR feature and an HDHomerun Quatro, can it save to a NAS or my laptop's HD? I guess it has to since the HDHomerun Quatro only has a power plug, ethernet input and a coax input.

Curious as to how it saves to a NAS? Is it in the settings?

The HDHomerun picks up the OTA signals and kind of rebroadcasts them over your network. In order to record, you need more equipment and software, like Plex.

Generally, setting up Plex involves pointing it at the locations where you store your media. These locations can be the server's own hard drive, a NAS, etc. For example, you might set your Plex 'TV Shows' library to point at a particular folder on your NAS.

When setting up Plex DVR, it should auto-detect your HDHomerun, and any recordings you set should just save to your 'TV Shows' library.

Yea, I tried with a Hauppage TV Tuner and it recognized it but I don't have the correct model to do OTA tv to Plex. That being said, if I can record OTA TV to my Laptop's HD then it's 1 less expense if I don't have to buy a NAS.

I guess, in essense, my laptop's HD becomes a NAS, in a way... Just hope it would work as easy as I think it would, in my head.

ETA: Does the HDHomerun re-broadcast in full HD or does it really limit the signal down to 720p?

Thanks for the replies. This thread pretty much matched other NAS threads, i.e., not too much info out there. One video I watched basically said that qnap was a bit more customizable, but I don’t necessarily need that. I guess I’ll compare hardware specs and go with whatever’s the better deal.
