It's data collection, every single tiny little bit of data they can collect on a person they will collect.
They have enough data on you that they know what you're doing tomorrow even if you haven't decided.

You phone is absolutely not using the microphone and actively listening to things you say in order to send you advertisements.
The scary part is that they don't need to. These companies know so much about you that they can get spooky with their ad targeting. The give you ads based on what you have searched, what other people using your wifi have searched, what other people who they think are similar (age, location, etc) to you have searched. Ads based on words that are on the page you are looking at. (the watch some are seeing ads for on TD)
You don't remember what you got ads for the 999 out of 1000 times you get an ad for something that you didn't just talk about. You only remember the one that makes it seem like your phone is listening to you.

I've been lucky. Never had an ad show up for shite I've talked about. Only searched on Google
