I asked this in another thread yesterday with no response, to avoid creating a thread, but got no response. Sooo here's a thread.

I'm seeing the discount deals for MS Home and Business, so really wondering if buying it would be like the way it use to be back before MS365 and all the MS Cloud push. Basic simple question's I know, but wanted to make sure I get the basics out of the way before I buy some licenses. TIA

1) Is there any major differences between MS Home and Business than the PRO version? I don't need 'Access'

2) I hate doing things where it needs to be in their cloud so why I don't want the sub version, so going this route will totally avoid that and will be 100% private on my laptop(s) right? To where MS has no access to my docs, and all saved on my laptop HD....old school stylez.

3) Big but little thing...does this version allow you to set the 'auto-save,' like we use to be able to? As that is annoying on the 365 version, as you can't set it unless you are connected to their cloud.

4) I will need it on 2 Window Laptops (v.11) and a MACBOOK PRO...need anything special for the MB version or is it exactly the same as the WIN ones?

5) What if I were to have to switch out one of laptops for a new one, is the license on old one transferrable to the new laptop? Or should I buy a couple extra licenses now that they are cheap? And do they expire?

6) And a random question...is there a good thread on here that discusses creation of your own cloud so I could essentially create the sharing between all 3 of my laptops, but its controlled totally by me and I would be the only one to have access. Maybe there is a system that has a good UI, like a MS365.

My bad for the long post and questions...but figure get them out of the way...TIA to anyone able to help.

1. If you don't need Access, you don't need Pro.
2. You don't have to save things to the cloud with any version of office. All files can be forced to be local.
3. I'm not sure where you ran into this, but my auto-save for O365 is local whenever I save the file locally.
4. Then you're buying two licenses. There are differences, but given the types of questions you're asking, you're not going to notice.
5. I don't know for sure. However, back before Microsoft licenses were linked to your Microsoft account, transferring a Windows license between computers (i.e., when you swapped a motherboard) required you to call in.
6. I'm sure there is a thread on it, but a local NAS is what you're after. I love the Synology interface, and you can get a two bay NAS fairly cheap, stick two drives in it, and be off and running. Make sure the drives are mirrored to protect your data. Check this app from Synology to get a rundown.

Thank you for your response. Sounds like getting these will be a good deal for me.

Saving local is key for me and don't even turn on my iPhone cloud. I'd rather buy HDs then do that.

I've had company MS365 in the past so maybe the auto-save piece is something specific to that kind. Never had my own 365 sub acct.

Noted on the MS Acct part linked to licenses, and perhaps I have to call to switch motherboards. They are cheap enough I may just buy an extra one in case.

Thanks for the guidance on local NAS. Gives me a starting point to look into. I'm sure I'll be on here asking more about it once I go down that rabbit hole.

Thanks again!

Quick question for you/or anyone that may know...

So it says that it needs Windows10+. I don't have it on my MACBOOK as its a bit older I think '18/'19, and looking it up Apple says that I need 'Bootcamp' which seems to have comp out on MB20+. So is there no way for me to put this on my MB? It really isn't THAT important if its not possible, but to be able to transfer/edit a doc on it, etc. Also, I like Outlook for emails.

Install Windows 10 on your Mac with Boot Camp Assistant
