Modem and router question

I am looking for a good modem and router. I currently have one I bought through COX and its terrible. I cannot get a fast connection it drops sometimes and sometimes I cannot catch a signal across the house. I also currently have COX's fastest internet and my modem and router are built into one. So my question to you is should I go with separate units and which ones are recommended. Also I plan on adding a wireless extender to help with signal strength across the house and outside. Thanks for any help.

What speed service are you paying for?
How large of an area are you trying to cover (including number of stories high)?
Have you plugged into the rear of the modem to check speed?
Separate modem and router are always recommended.

paying for 100mbps no have not checked, I will when I get home. The house is nothing to large about 2400, and 1 story. I am just not getting a very strong signal so I think I am going to take your advice and get 2 separate units.

The Cox modem is probably fine, you just need a new router. Hook something up directly to the modem to check that. A new router would also most likely solve the signal loss issue. It did in my ~3,000 sq feet house without any repeaters or anything, just the router. I'd try that first before springing for a second unit or repeater or anything. I bought a Netgear router for around $100 a little over a year ago and haven't had any issues. I'm on AT&T with slower speeds than yours and we have no problems streaming 2-3 things at a time.
My more tech savvy friend recommended the Netgear to me.
If you're set on 2 units, I'd get a mesh system.

It's a built in router to the modem, and I think that might be the problem. I plan on buying a modem and a router like the netgear, just wanted some opinions on good gear. Thanks for the recommendation of the netgear.

I have 100mbps with Xfinity using their modem/router and was constantly only getting 15-25 download speeds. House is 3300 sq ft and 2 stories. I went to Best Buy, talked to an employee, and learned up on what I really needed. Ended up getting a separate modem and router from Amazon. My download speeds instantly went up to 120 and as of ,late, are at 170. I think Xfinity may have increased speeds for free. Signal is also much better through house and outside on porch. I went with the Tri band router to be able to select what devices I put on each band.
Motorola modem
Netgear router
eta: Buy your own equipment so can return your $10 /month or whatever crap back to COX

It's not that it's always a bad setup, it's just harder to diagnose issues between the two systems.
Don't add on a wireless router unless you can turn off the wifi broadcast on the modem. Additional interference will cause more issues.
You want your router to be placed as high as possible.
Can you gain access to the wifi settings? If so, you can download a free app to check all the wifi signals in your area. Then you can select a channel which has fewer signals on it to decrease the potential for interference.

I’m with Cox and have the 100 plan.
I had a Zoom 5350 modem with a nice Netgear router, but performance fell off.
Now have an Arris Surfboard SB6183 modem and Google WiFi (3 hubs) for the router. Performance has been perfect.
