Just a general feel about them and if they would make a decent 1st PC for a 10 year old. Basically something that would be a non gaming home PC.
Thanks in advance

I've got a middle of the line Intel NUC (about 4 1/2 inches square and just over two inches high) that works great - I don't do any gaming on it but I can do some 3-D design work on it, so it should do a 10 year old fine. You will need an external optical drive, however. Otherwise, (except for that and not having a video card) they seem to be the equivalent of most any regular desktop PC.
I've also got an older, slightly bigger Lenovo that I use as a media server and it also works great.
Edited to add: I forgot to mention that they both run 4k monitors fine (and of course you can load them up with RAM and an SSD to make them fly).

If space is a premium, these are great. But if you can stand to go a teeny bit bigger (ETA ~7”x7”x1.5”), these guys are king. Dell, HP, and Lenovo all sell a micro form factor pc. The linked computer has a 6-series i5 (6500T), 16gb RAM, and a 512GB ssd. It will do any “home” computing task with relative ease, and it’s very small as well. The problem with these is that there are hundreds of configurations and somewhat hard to search for.
The easiest way to search is to pick the CPU you want by its alphanumeric code (they’re all “T” processors, so 6500T, 8700T, etc) and then sort through the Amazon hits for the one that has the ports (usb A vs A+C, HDMI/vga/DP) with the right SSD/RAM that you want. You probably don’t want less than 256gb of storage or 8GB of RAM, and you probably would prefer 16GB of RAM to 8GB.
Unfortunately, these things are way more expensive when you configure them like you want them. But I buy these off-lease guys for my office as we need them. They’re the best way to buy SFF desktops right now.

Depends on how much you want to spend, but dell and hp have some good micro form factor desktops

Something like a Raspberry Pi running Ubuntu could work. May be safer than a windows machine but you need a little tech knowledge to get it setup. That said, involve your kid and make it a learning experience.
