I'd like to have a PC set up for the barndominium and was wanting something less power hungry but still pretty functional. Am I on the right path looking at something like this? Amazon Mini Computer

I'm going with Eufy for door and other cams to start with, and will be using TP link light switches for selected circuits. I'm eventually adding solar/battery and will have an app for PM at that time. That's off the top of my head and I'd appreciate any other suggested controls/apps you might have.

Please define "pretty functional."

A Microsoft Surface Go 3 is also an option in the similar price range. I bought one for my son, and he loves it.

I'm thinking, good wifi compatibility, decent speed and ram, internal drive size not that important. For what it lacks in ports, can they be added if needed?

Speed for what? Are you going to try to play Call of Duty on it? I'm guessing not, but your option looks fine. You'll find a number of monitors that have a mount point on the backside of the monitor to attach units like you've selected.

I've never heard of Beelink, make sure you understand their return policies. This statement in their ad seems odd:

Yes, ports can always be added. The only real catch is that if you're plugging in something that requires a lot of power, you have to pay close attention to whatever dock you buy because not all of them can provide the max amount of power to any/all ports. If you're not trying to power a laptop, your biggest issue would likely be a spinning hard drive or a Blu-Ray player.

Thanks for the tips, I'm just starting to look at those and picked that one out of a daily deal round up. Ultimately I'll be interfacing with an IO board to control some gates with Eufy visual verification so I can let the cows in on a feed bunker without having to travel there every weekend.

Make sure you put UPS batteries on nearly everything. The higher the level of "smart" you go on a property, the more important battery backups are. Stick one on your wifi router/cable modem, another on your "home hubs" (Alarm hub, Hue hub, etc.) Come to think of it, look into the Aeotec smart home hub. Aeotec manufactured the Samsung SmartThings hub, and the Aeotec is essentially the same thing. It supports both Z-Wave and Zigbee, and is great for tying together your smart locks, cameras, etc. It already is Matter certified, too.

You can go pretty small based on what you're talking about powering, but my single non-negotiable feature: An audible alarm that you can turn off via software. If the power goes out, even in the middle of the night, I'm going to wake up anyway, I don't need a bunch of random beeping to let me know the A/C is off and the ceiling fan isn't spinning.

You're already in a higher risk location in a barn, and your livestock depend on you!

Will be off grid primarily, I'm looking at an 11kw panels, 20kw battery, 13kw inverter kit from signature solar. Will be an off grid setup with the option via manual transfer switch to grid in emergencies. Place will be occupied less than 50% of time but will be occupied longer in stretches.

Are you going to be using Starlink or do you have real Internet out there?

You may struggle with that, particularly when there is weather. Have you tested it at that location? It sounds remote, but you're probably not far from I-10. However, 5G range is much more limited than 4G, and you need to be prepared to have to force the hotspot into 4G if there is a weather or power issue.

A few of us have had problems with Beelink hardware failing but they have a good return policy.

I'm not sure how low powered you want to go but this Celeron based Intel NUC might provide enough:
