My kid does a ton of video editing. He is in a video editing class and uses Final Cut Pro at school, but he uses iMovie for most of his personal editing currently.

He's been using my Macbook Air for personal editing, but it's time to get him something a little more capable as my Air requires way too much rebooting on big projects. I'm not completely devoted to the Mac ecosystem, but it would probably be my preference if we can find something in the price range he's looking at.

I've been considering looking at refurbs as well, but I'm not sure what level of spec on a MacBook pro I should be looking for with a laptop primarily dedicated to video editing.

Any advice?

depending on your price range, a Mac is your best bet..

and I hate them, unless you are doing photo/video editing

First thing to answer is budget. The price can shoot up quickly, especially for laptops designed for content creators. I would be prepared to spend more then $2K.

If he's used to Final Cut and iMovie, sticking with the Mac ecosystem may be the way to go. I would also shy away from refurb stuff as well. The M1 chips don't perform very well for rendering video and then there's the whole Apple "forced obsolescence" thing. I would recommend a new MBP if it's within your budget and look for an M2 Pro or M2 Max chip. A regular M2 chip is just "ok", but can work for a tighter budget.

Honestly, if he's starting to get serious with video editing and could be something he will do long-term, you (and he) would probably do better to consider a desktop instead. You get a much higher price-to-performance value. Professionals generally only use laptops when in the field or for special projects and not for everyday editing. Apple has the Mac Studio that has had positive reviews from content creators and is priced about the same as a MBP. If he's good with learning a new ecosystem and editing program, you can build a really beefy Windows desktop and get a ton more performance for about the same price as a Mac.

Thanks so much for the through answer. Refurbs are tempting due to cost, but it’s good to know that processing speed probably isn’t there. We’ve debated on desktop vs. laptop, but he mainly put together mountain bike films and edits, so he’s often working on projects away from home. He’s a cheap arse like me, so he’s already talking about going down the wormhole of putting together a windows machine. He has access to premier pro and knows it as well, so we may go that route. Or I may hit up grandparents for contributions on next birthday. He has 1,000 saved up, but that won’t get him a MBP.

This is what Macs are made for. Movie producers/editors use them almost exclusively.

It's a little risky but used on FB Marketplace and EBay or other lower cost options.
