Laptop for "Recording Studio"

I've got a 14 year old guitarist who's wanting to build out the basement recording studio. I guess the first step is a laptop? Is something generic off of Best Buy suitable? Any recommendations?

How much are you looking to spend?
I would probably lean toward getting him a gaming laptop. Generally, they'll have better specs which should run any DAW a 14 year old wants to plus he can game on it too.
Gaming Laptops at Best Buy
You may even try a place like ibuypower which sells prebuilt PC's and laptops. ibuypower gaming laptops
It all goes back to my original question though. How much are you looking to spend?

I had a custom build desktop PC for my studio for a long time and got rid of it for a laptop thinking I would be making music in different places. It's a decision I regret and look forward to building a new PC soon. Get the best processor you can afford and load it up with RAM.

A PC would definitely be the way to go. The only reason I suggested a laptop is that's what the OP mentioned.

I'd like to keep the initial cost under $1k, the audio interface is about $250, so, budget $700 or so on computer.

In that case, I would do what TTB recommended and find a laptop that has as fast a processor and as much RAM you can get for $700.
The laptop in the link below is the cheapest one I could find on Best Buy's website that has 16GB of RAM which is the bare minimum I'd start with.
TTB may have a better recommendation, so hopefully he'll chime back in.
Best Buy Link
ETA: If you go with this laptop, you'll probably need to get an external hard drive as well. 512GB of storage won't last long.

Which interface and which DAW?
An m1 Mac mini or MacBook Air could deserve pretty serious consideration.
Otherwise, sticking to the recommended specs for the DAW would be the best guide. They generally aren’t super resource heavy. I ran Ubuntu Studio on an outdated laptop for years before retiring it.

Macs play really nice out of the box with audio interfaces and midi controllers compared to pcs. If he also has iPhone, a M1 Mac mini or Air makes too much sense. They’ll handle anything he can learn in a couple years, come with Garageband (logic lite) for free which is fine for a beginner playing around. And then he can try out trials of FL Studio and Ableton and pick one of those 3 from there to really learn.
Also everything mentioned above offers education discounts for high school or college students. (Including the mac hardware) so don’t miss out in that.

The new MacBook pro is AMAZING, Ableton doesn't even dent the resources, even when loading up a assload of tracks and VST

Both of my daughters are into recording their music. I set them up with an iPad and garage band. If the guitar has a pickup you can get an iRig Pro Duo and have her plug it directly into the iPad along with a microphone for singing. Garage Band you can do multiple tracks and nice editing. I've been really impressed with what they've been able to do with it.
We also got them a nice condenser Microphone and a mini studio setup.

Typically, yes. But right now it is really a waste of money to buy any Intel Mac.
The $700 M1 Mac mini is as fast as a new $2000 27” iMac even with overhead on Rosetta 2 apps.
I have had the new M1 Max for over a month now, have thrown everything I can at it and I still haven’t heard the fans.
