My son is in IT at Southeastern. He’s starting design classes and needs a laptop that will handle that.
I’m not up to date on modern computer standards so please don’t hit me with a bunch of jargon that I might not understand.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Is he going to be doing 3D stuff? If so then he will want a graphics card such as Nvidia Quadro and as much ram as you can afford, i.e. 32 gigs. If its just 2D drawings then he can get away with a regular graphics processor and 8 gigs of ram but 16 would be better.
Here is a good article explaining all this

I’m not sure what he’ll use it for. He’s coming home Thursday and we are going to look at some specs he has for what he needs.
Thanks for the info and link.
Any brands to stay away from?

I usually get a gaming laptop (Dell G7, ASUS M16). They run Revit and 3d Autocad just fine with 16gigs of RAM. If he's just running 2d Autocad, pretty much any laptop with 8gigs ram will run it fine. For ref. I still use an old laptop with 8 occasionally and it runs OK.

This.
We have a few users who use AutoCAD so we got them Dell Precision 7510's back in 2016 and they still run like champs (32GB RAM, Quatro M2000M video w/4GB video RAM, M.2 primary drive with a HDD for data warehousing & i7 processor).
The RAM is going to be important whether doing 2D or 3D, go with 16GB as a minimum. If he's going to be doing 3D stuff (which he likely eventually will if he sticks with the major), the dedicated video card (as opposed to the integrated video, which is part of the motherboard) is a must.
