I had an old 2007 13" white macbook in a cabinet collecting dust and after watching some youtube videos thought I'd try to bring it back to life.
First I downloaded Linux Ubuntu 16.4 32 Bit and installed it on Macbook. This took me a few days and multiple try and fail attempts but finally got it on there. It's running flawless and I'm really impressed with Ubuntu. I recommend having an bootable version of Mac OS as you'll need it to bring your computer back to Mac OS if you mess up in the process. I screwed up once and thought I had completely killed the laptop but I put Snow Leopard back in the DVD drive and was able to reformat the hard drive and get Mac OS back on and brought it back to life.
Next was adding Plex to it and making it my Plex server. Plex is great on Linux and has it's own app
specially designed for Linux. I have it linked to my new Nvidia Shield and so far working fine.
Next was to get IPVanish setup on laptop to use bittorrent and add to my media library. This took awhile for me to figure out as with Linux there's not alot of easy download from internet files and packages out there for Linux, you have to do alot of commands in terminal ect...and it can be a little overwhelming but I found a step by step guide and now have my IP hidden and rerouted.
Lastly was to start building my media library. Linux Ubuntu comes loaded with Transmission and I'm using Pirate Bay and Transmission to download some torrents and beginning to seed to get a good ratio.
I'm kinda impressed that I've been able to do all this with this old laptop and really excited about using it again. This thing couldn't do anything anymore as Snow Leopard was the last OS that I could install on it. All the web browsers were old and crap. My plan is to only use it as a Plex Server and Torrent downloader.
A couple questions I have is does anyone have a large Plex server that would be willing to share with me? TIA
Any advice or warnings from anyone going forward with this setup that I might have missed?

Following, as I've got an older mac I've been thinking about doing something similar with...

Everything was free too. Linux doesn't cost anything, Plex either. Just download the ISO file from Ubuntu and either burn it on a bootable disk or USB, I used disk since I couldn't get mine to boot from USB. Also if you're not sure if you use 32 or 64 bit just try with 64 first and if it doesn't let you boot then try with the 32 bit and it should work.

I have a MacBook Pro May ‘10, that I’m interested in doing this with in the next 18 months. That time frame exists become I’m still using it for everyday work.

I can hook you up with an IPTorrents invite if you plan on seeding. Have to seed each download to a 1:1 ratio or for two weeks, whichever comes first.

Anyone familiar with Ivacy VPN? Seems like they're doing one of the cheap "lifetime" subs for 24 bucks... granted its the same as the rest with 5 year "sub" and you message for additional... I just look at these as largely 2-3 year deals and if I get more, great.
I've seen some posts about leaks from random commenters, but the reviews (as with most of the services) are wildly up and down... Don't need a perfect system so don't want to overpay, but if it's pure crap, don't wanna waste the money either...
