I currently have an iPhone through AT&T, I'm eligible for an upgrade but it seems like instead of paying their monthly rate for a new phone I could get one cheaper somewhere else. If I did this, would this affect my contract? Who has the best prices?

If you buy the phone through AT&T, it is simply the unsubsidized price of the phone divided by however many months you choose. I think it was something like 18, 30, and maybe some other option as the number of months. If you were to buy one used and activate it on your plan, I don't think it would change your plan. At least that's how it was on Verizon when I had to replace my wife's phone. Just called them up to activate it with her number. Plan stayed the same.

Shop around on craigslist or those FB trading sites. VarageSale probably has something in your area.

Are other retailers able to offer new phones at discount prices, or will I find the same price everywhere?

I just went through this with att as well. Went to ebay and bought a 5s iphone with 32gb manufacturer refurbished for 279.00.....total cost from att for this same phone was over 550.00. That's the last time I even shop for a phone with att. And yes, rates and plan stay the same.

Ended up buying the new 6s 64 at Costco, cost was $750, but got a $150 Costco card with purchase.
