Is it time to get a new laptop?

Here are the specs for my asus laptop
Asus G752VL
RAM: 12 GB
System type: 64 bit, x 64 based processor
Processor: Intel Core i7-6700HQ @ 2.6 GHZ 2.59 GHz
HD is 1 TB
Had it for four or five years now. Backlight stopped working on keyboard and sometimes it's a little sluggish. Should I just add more RAM?

RAM is good. All is good really.
Do you notice if the hard drive is cranking a lot, even when you aren't doing anything? If so, hit the start button and type "services" and fire up the Services app. Find "SysMain", right click and stop it. Then go to properties and change startup type to "disabled". See if it's less sluggish after that.
If you really want it to fly, swap out the hard drive for a 1TB SSD for ~$100. Preference is to install Windows from scratch, but if you don't want to install everything over again you can clone your old drive to it.
Or if you're just looking for a reason to spend some money, sure go ahead and buy something newer.

If I do that to sysmain, what is it doing?

The SSD upgrade should make a world of difference. I was in this position a few years ago and the upgrade to SSD gave me several more years of good performance.

SysMain is a service that tries to optimize your computer according to your use patterns. It replaced SuperFetch. It's a good idea in principle, but in typical Microsoft fashion it seems they've bungled the implementation. After a while on some machines it starts using way more resources (particularly hitting the hard disk all the time) than it saves.
It is absolutely not a critical service, and your computer won't do anything differently or be crippled in any way. I can't be sure this is the problem with your machine (you can load up task manager, show all processes, sort by disk utilization to check), but it seems to do more harm than good for some computers. Can't hurt to try it, and you can turn it back on whenever.
