iPhone Update Help

My mom and dad both have an iphone but they are set up under the same apple ID. My mom updated her phone to the latest ios11 (at some point it asked her to give a number and it would text here a validation code or something of that nature), she used my dads number. Since the update when someone calls her phone my dads phone also rings.
I could typically fix this problem but live 5hrs from them and its not coming to me what the fix is for this.

Tell them to (on your Dad’s phone), try going to:
Settings
Apple ID (very top option once entering settings)
Locate her iPhone in the device list and select it, then scroll down and select “remove from account”
