Iphone texting question regarding pictures

Text a picture to someone. Or receive a picture. The picture shows up zoomed in. You have to open the picture to see the entire picture.
Why. Why tf would they do this? Is there a way to disable it?

To save space on the messages screen. If the pic came in full size, or anything close to it, you wouldn't be able to see if the person sent you a text message along with it, or a message that arrived directly before it. Get used to it.
