iPhone 7 plus portrait mode not working

I just bought a "mint" iphone 7 plus for my wife on Swappa. The main reason she wanted one is that she takes a lot of pictures of our kids, and she wanted a Plus because of portrait mode camera functio. But it keeps telling us to "move back", which we do, then it says "move closer". It will only focus sometimes and actually take the portrait with the blurred background. We've tried in all kinds of lighting, etc. Anyone have or heard of the same issue and know of any fixes? TIA

The portrait mode is fairly finicky. I’ve found that if you aren’t right in the sweet spot it won’t work. I’ve had success following the on screen “move back” and “move closer” but the subject has to remain perfectly still. Most of my portrait mode photos are portraits of objects not people.
