Moved houses recently and switched from ATT to Comcast Xfinity which are the only options. Made the switch bc ATT only offered 50 mpbs vs Comcast at 300 for same price. Worst thing I’ve done bc I can’t get enough connection to support two iPhones and a firestick. Best speed test so far gives us around 76 mbps. We’ve had two Comcast techs come and one ran newer coax to the modem. Every time I call with issues I get a different reason why we might have problems or why they can’t send anyone. We’re using our own modem and router, both Netgear. I know the router is a nighthawk but can’t remember the modem. Both are new. Network settings in the firestick always says the signal strength is “very good” and gets 2.4 GHz but cannot keep a connection. The firestick is maybe 8 months old. Just wondering if I should pay the cancellation and switch back to att, which I later learned has fiber running close to the house just not directly to it. Not super tech savvy so any advice is appreciated.

plug a computer into the modem directly and run a speed test...

Actually did that yesterday for the first time. Said 76 as well. Comcast has “reprogrammed” and “registered” the modem over the phone too. They act like everything is 100% on their end and refuse to send someone cause if the virus

Oh damn, that sucks. By chance is your modem on ISPs approved/compatible list? Is your modem a docsis 3.0 model?

When I signed up for Comcast I used their modem / router for a month thinking they would own any problems. After that I installed my own gear and returned their's.

It’s compatible with Comcast but not sure on the docsis part. They said they reprogrammed the modem over the phone during one of our calls.

Yes it’s a docsis 3.0. It’s a Netgear CM500. I guess it boils down to should I switch back to att if they can guarantee 50 mbps which I would think be enough to support one firestick and two phones

Man that sucks...so i’m kinda just stabbing in the dark, but do you have a cable distribution box on outside of your house? I ask bc mine has the coax connections out there and they have specific filters, so if i want to move my modem from one coax connection to the other then i have to also change the connection out at that distro box. This could test to see if it’s internal...also sounds like tech not coming out due to virus is bs...

I think Xfinity has the same Contour modem router combo unit that Cox uses here in BR. They are using docis 3.1 if I'm not mistaken. I originally purchased a very expensive modem router but I could never get the 300mbs I'm paying for. Always around 90 or so. Tech asked if he could plug in one of their Contour routers to test. It's the one that looks like a little tower. Plugged it in and set it up, and whamo! Over 300mbs on wifi on my phone on 5g. Specs on my router say I should easily be good for gigabit and more. I hate to sound like a conspiracy theorist but I am now convinced that Xfinity and Cox throttle your bandwidth if your using your own equipment. I suspected that before but this seemed so clear. Who knows. The tech asked me if I wanted to keep it and he could leave it and add it to my account. I asked if there was any benefit to it besides obviously better speed. He said yeah, the new wireless 4k mini boxes can only work with the Contour router. WUT??! 4k?? Wireless?? Nobody has said anything to me about 4k. I didn't know they had 4k,much less wireless. He said yes, they are new and they aren't really advertising them because everyone will want one and they have a limited supply as of 2 months ago when I got them. I don't know if they are pushing them now but at that time they said nothing about them, and I had even asked when I signed up. I understand that Xfinity uses these same 4k minis in other markets as well. Traded 3 of my large Cisco boxes for wireless 4k minis. Super nice, and I swear the 4k picture is better than the 4k picture on the Directv 4k boxes I had previously. Of course there isn't any native 4k content but the boxes have the smart apps built in like Netflix, Prime, and lots of other stuff and that comes in beautifully in 4k. Anyway, sorry. Didn't mean to hijack your router thread, lol.

I have 150mbps from Cox in Baton Rouge, my own Arris modem, and no issues getting advertised speeds.
