I am not interested in getting a data plan for iPads for my kids? Can I just purchase the devices online and hook up to wifi here?

Forgive me, but I haven't bought an iPad in about a decade.

Thank you in advance.

Just get the WiFi-only IPad.

Will they use it often in an area that doesn't have wifi?
If the answer is yes, then ask yourself if the apps that they'll use the most will require internet.
You're talking about kids here, I don't see the need.

They should just use them in the cars and at home. And they both have school assignments/videos that need watched for homework. Trying to make sure I dont mess up and get the wrong thing and they get no use out of it.

I think the wifi version should be fine. If this is for school then why not ask others what they have and if it works?

Just get the Wifi only version.

Worst case, if they need to have internet in the car they can just tether to your phone. No need to get a separate data plan.

Exactly. In the occasion I am not in rangle of available wifi I tether it to my phone. You save money on the iPad itself plus no need to pay extra to your mobile provider.

If it's mostly for school assignments, I would consider a Chromebook instead of an iPad. Bought my daughter one for $120.

In the rare event I’m not near WiFi, I connect to my phones hotspot to use cellular data. No need nowadays for the cellular function on iPads, IMHO
