How to do screen in screen gaming videos?

So, these youtube gamers will record themselves playing a game, but in the corner have themselves on a headset simultaneously. How is this accomplished?
I have Windows Movie Maker and Steam account. I have an older panasonic camera and a detachable computer camera.
The reason I'm asking is because my 8yo wants to make his own video game "movies". Not to publish on youtube.... yet. But someday when he's older maybe.

I have Streamyard. It does the same thing. But OBS studio is very popular for these folks. They sometimes add a green curtain behind them and use the filters in these to crop the green out.

Another vote for OBS. It's free, open source, and easy to use. Streamlabs is also popular with game streamers but is really just a customized version of OBS and they have a paid version to get some extras.
Both have the ability to stream directly to all the major platforms but they can also record locally. Some good YT channels to check out are Eposvox and Andilippi. Both have some great beginner stuff to get started and more advanced stuff as you or your son learn. Capturing the gameplay and face cam separately, then putting them together in a video editing program, while possible, is not as easy as doing both at once in OBS.
The "face cam" in the corner is accomplished by layering a camera feed over the gameplay which is very easy to set up in OBS. Just add the Window Capture to get the gameplay and add a Video Capture Device on top of it. Resize the face cam and position it and you are good to go. That is the VERY basics of setting it up.
The next question to ask is how powerful of a computer you have. Encoding video uses A LOT of resources on your computer and it increases exponentially as you increase resolution. Depending on the game, if it runs at 4K and 120 frames per second, then you have a 4k camera added to it, and recording all of that in 4K, you will bring a general store-bought PC to its knees. You may be able to get by as he's learning but if it's something he really starts getting interested in, you'll need to do some pretty significant upgrades. Some of the more popular gamers actually use 2 computers: one to play the game and another to record everything. But that's WAY more advanced than what you are ready for.
It sounds like you have just about everything you need to at least get started. Use the USB camera as the face cam and it should show up in the Video Capture Device list. A few things that would make it more "professional" would be a pop-up green screen and some decent video lighting. Both of which you can get inexpensively from Amazon. You may also want to get a large external hard drive to store the recordings because those video files can get big and the main drive will get filled up in a hurry.

Is he wanting to record games being played on a console or a computer? Laptop or desktop? If it is console or desktop, you will need an HDMI splitter, another computer or laptop with OBS installed and 2 HDMI capture devices. These cheap ones will suffice for now, no need to spring for the Camlink ones just yet. May aslo need a USB 3.0 hub if it is a laptop since number of USB ports will be limited.

I downloaded OBS today and it's a bitch to learn but I *think* I have it figured out now. As much time as I put into figuring it out, I might as well start a UGA shite talk channel, and/or put it on my linkedin profile. "I think I figured out OBS in about 3 hours without domestic violence or animal abuse".
That's just getting a local recording. That's not streaming or editing.
I'm about to start another bitchfest about editing.
