How do I give my child an old phone for texting only?

The only thing that he really wants a phone for is to text his friends. Wife is the only one on a plan right now, and is looking to upgrade to a new iphone and considering giving him her old one for texting only. What's the best way to set this up? I'm assuming a new apple ID and phone# needs to be created? I don't really want to add a line, just for texting purposes if I don't have to.

A new Apple ID is all that is needed for the handed down iPhone. You do not need to add a line for texting only purposes. Your son can use the messages app to text freely (but only while connected to wifi or a hotspot) to other Apple branded devices (iPhones/iPads/Mac computers). However, he will have to use a third party messaging app in order to be able to text with friends of his who use an Android phone.

You could setup Google voice with your wife's number and a Gmail account. They give you a separate number. Setup Google voice app on his device and let him go to town. He can take the number with him when he gets on a real cell plan. Not sure if iOS allows the Google voice app tho. Silver lining if you're helicopter parents, it would be super easy to invade his privacy see all his text and calls from your Gmail account.

Depending on how old your son is and your style of parenting, an old phone still opens a pandora's box of exposure that you need to be aware of and out in front of. Picture messaging, internet (including youtube) access, inappropriate music....all things that can be appropriately limited- you can even decide that the appropriate limit is none at all.
