HELP: RAID 5 Hard Drive Swap
Posted on 10/21/14 at 11:04 am

I have a RAID 5 array set up on my home PC with 4 Seagate Seagate ST3000VN000 3TB hard drives. One of them has started squealing from time to time. From what I've read it is better to change it out now than waiting until it fails. Assuming this is correct, how do I:
1. Identify the failing drive? (I have run Seatools but they all test ok)
2. Swap it out without losing any data?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

If your controller is not identifying a bad drive, your best bet is probably to wait until failure. You could add a hot spare so it starts rebuilding when the time comes.

I'm pretty sure it's a drive. They are in my tower not a separate enclosure. Also, it seems to happen mostly when I access files stored on the hard drive. I run my OS off a separate SSD.

I wish I could, but all of my SATA ports are taken.

That's good to know. Will there be any kind of alert that pops up or do I just need to keep running Seatools?

quote:Depends how you have it setup, are you using a software or hardware RAID? If hardware, the hardware should have monitoring tools that notify you. If software, not sure how Windows handles it but I would think you would get some sort of notification of a failed disk and a degraded array. I do not know enough about software RAIDs to give you a definitive answer.

I figured you could look at the event viewer.
Why not swap out the hard drive you think it is and let it rebuild? If it stops squeaking then you're good. If it's still squealing then pull out another hard drive and put the original hard drive back in and let it rebuild.

This. Be sure to be patient and wait long enough to finish the rebuilding process.
