Help me understand Govee Bluetooth vs Wifi

For some future decorations I got a pair of Govee LED strips.
I'd like to use the Govee app on my phone to control the strips, and for distance reasons, I'd like to control the lights via wifi rather than bluetooth. (They'll be in the attic, which may or may not reach my ground level via bluetooth.) Is it possible to connect this via wifi?
The instructions specify that the wifi has to use the 2.4 GHz rather than the 5GHz, so I did set my phone to that router "channel".
When I open the app, it works fine with bluetooth, but not without. I turned BT off to try to force it to wifi, but it messages to Enable BT.
Thoughts?

Is your router setup with 2 different SSIDs to separate the 2.4mhz and 5mhz? That could be a potential issue.
I have a Govee bluetooth thermometer/humidity device i can access on the mobile app, but i’ve never messed around with any of their other devices.
