Help getting sound out of smart TV apps

Hi there
Just got my 75 inch Samsung 8000 and love it, however it has a row of apps on the tv such as Plex, Netflix, etc.
I have the tv plugging into the Onkyo receiver. when i listen to the tv the sound comes out of the Onkyo, but when i play netflix there is no sound.
i looked online and read where i needed an Optical cable, so i got one and plugged one side in the tv and the other in the Onkyo but still nothing.
am i doing this right? Any suggestions are appreciated

Need to make sure you are connected to an optical output from the television, not an input.

How was your TV connected prior to the optical such that the AVR was producing sound? It really shouldn’t matter. All the built in apps should work just the same as the TV’s built in tuner.

Which TVs have optical inputs, pray tell? Along with correct input assignment, it could be a consideration for the AVR, but not the TV.

Samsung has an audio out and I have it connected straight from that to the onkyo
The onkyo produces the sound for normal use for DIRECTV in the SAT input
I was hoping I wouldn't have to do anything special for Netflix through the tv

Do you have HDMI on the AVR? If so, you should be connecting the DirecTV to AVR and then to TV with HDMI. If your TV and AVR support ARC (Audio Return Channel), and you've hooked it up correctly, that should take care of the TV's apps.
If not, you should run optical from the TV to the AVR, using a designated "TV" input on the AVR or making sure the AVR optical jack you use is assigned to the input on the AVR you want to use for TV sound. To avoid having to switch between "SAT" and "TV" on the AVR, you could try connecting the DirecTV to the TV and using the TV as the HDMI switch, but YMMV as to what audio formats the TV passes from its HDMI inputs to its optical out.
Hope that makes sense.

Yes. I think I got it
I just have to turn off directv when I play the apps and the sound comes on
I did notice the 4K on Netflix looks the same as HD. I don't notice a difference
It says 4K ultra HD on Netflix but I'm wondering if it's something else I have to do or does it automatically display 4K?

Go to your Netflix membership in account settings and up your monthly rate. I think for 4K it's around $14/month now

It should automatically display 4K as long as your internet speed is fast enough. 4K is more noticeable in scenes with a lot of small details/items on the screen, a basic close up of an actors face won’t look that much different. But on a 75 inch screen everything should look considerably better unless your sitting 20 feet away

I'm aware. And if you don't have the 4k package it just displays the HD logo by a show, and it has the ultra hd 4k logo (like OP said) when you have that package

If you just have the tv plugged into the Onkyo this is how I would set it up, and you shouldn’t need that optical cable.
First, I would directly connect your set top box into one of the available HDMI inputs on your tv not labeled ARC. This would apply to any other streaming device you might use too (apple tv, game console, etc.)
Next, I would then connect your Onkyo using the HDMI ARC OUT (I’m assuming there is an arc out on your receiver unless it’s really old) and plug that into the HDMI ARC input on the tv. And that should be it. You shouldn’t have to worry about turning off the set top box so you can get sound out of the streaming apps in the tv. You would just need to turn on the receiver when you wanted to use the surround sound. Now you might need to go into your Onkyo receiver and enable hdmi control and ARC. And you might also have to enable an audio out setting in your tv’s sound settings. I can’t remember if I did or not and I just sold my tv for an lg so I can’t check.
And you’d likely be able to set up your Samsung smart remote to turn your receiver on and off. This is how I had my system set up with a 6-7 year old Sony AVR and it worked like a charm. I had to do it this way because my Sony receiver was pre 4K pass through, so I let my new tv handle al of those codecs.
