and they have to issue it

i currently have a 3 year old HP 840 with an i7 vPro, 8gb ram, and a 320 HD

the one i can get in its place is a new HP 640 G2 with an i5, 8 gb ram(im requesting 16), and a 256 SSD

do you think the new one will be near the performance of the current one? im worried going from that i7 to i5 will be a big difference

ah missed that part.

new i5s > older i7s and you get an SSD. i'd go for the newer HP.

It probably wont.
Most laptop CPUs carry the "u" designation, ie i7-7000u. u indicates low power consumption and TDP wattage and most (if not all) u CPUs are dual-core only. So the difference between an i7 and i5 of the same generation is generally just frequency (measured in Ghz) and its impact will be minimal.

Your new laptop will have a newer CPU (which will narrow the gap from stepping down from i7 to i5) and a SSD. The SSD will out perform your old HDD to the point you certainly will not miss the i7.

Get the new laptop.

not to mention the new one has a 10 hour battery life and mine is down to about 90 minutes

8GB should be fine. 16GB is better, but may not benefit you at all based on your usage. Impossible to really say without knowing your LoB apps

my company's network restricts a lot and slows everything down due to its VPN and security.

i use it for outlook, web browsing and going to sites like salesforce, etc.
