Google Maps (custom saved map)

Seems like something that should be easily findable by googling but I haven't found it.

I have a custom map of restaurants/sites/activities etc. that I add to when I see a new idea or place I want to visit . Lets you add a custom marker (beer mug for brewery/bar, hiking man for a trailhead, bed for lodging, etc). I've always done it from my computer which is super easy but was trying to add a spot on the app on my iphone but I can't seem to figure out how to do so? It wants me to add them to some lists instead of just adding a marker. Does anyone know how to do it the regular way and add the marker with the icon and color coding like on a computer?
