I want to get a beginner mini drone to play with. I want a camera feature. What are some good ones to look at? Thanks.

Folks on here say this all the time. Here's what a professional drone pilot says...

LINK /

quote:

Learning by doing is the way to go when it comes to Drone Operating. Daniel Zagayer says the best way to get started is to buy a cheap starter drone. Smaller drones are available on Amazon for $40 to $80. Zagayer recommends not going more expensive for your first drone because as you are learning you will indeed crash.

Zagayer also recommends committing to teaching yourself instead of investing in a drone school. It really can be a self-taught art: “Just get ready to crash and crash and crash until you don’t crash so much,” he admits. Zagayer also recommends following YouTube tutorials when you are first starting out: “They are an excellent resource.”

“Again, I would say buy a super cheap starter drone and fly. Learn how to fly really well. Once you can afford it, get yourself a DJI drone or Phantom. Take the test to get your FAA license, and then start shooting drone videos and post them on Instagram and social media to begin marketing yourself as a licensed operator.”

The better drones, like the DJIs, are ALOT easier to fly and ALOT harder to crash than a cheap drone.

Cheap drones don't have crash sensors, good GPS, etc etc etc. Learn how to use all that stuff and what their limits are and DJIs are extremely hard to crash unless you do stupid stuff with it.

Saying buy a cheap drone is like saying I'm going to learn in a oceangate sub instead of a US nuclear sub.

A DJI Mini 2 can be found used for about 250-300 pretty easily, maybe even 150 to 200.

A new Mini 2 SE is only $339

You're entitled to your opinion, and nothing you said is wrong. However, when I'm weighing out the VALUE of an opinion, I'll personally put a little more stock in what the guy who's a FAA licensed drone pilot and makes his living at it says, that's all.

It's the theory on learning to drive a car with a manual transmission vs an automatic. I might not ever NEED to use a clutch, but I'm glad that I learned on a car with one, just in case...

Do you know when his opinion was written?

Alot has changed in the last 5 years as far as cost for DJIs like the Mini and the safety/ease of flying them.

That's why I didn't recommend the The original DJI Mini.

As someone who had never picked up a drone before and was able to easily fly and not crash a Mavic pro and a Mini 2, I can say it's pretty fricking easy.

I have never crashed my Mini 2.

Overall, the best drone for beginners available today is the DJI Mini 2 or (ignoring budgetary concerns) the Mini 3 Pro. (opens in new tab) That's because they're light, compact, and easy to fly but also have good quality cameras.Jun 14, 2023

Cheap drones can be harder to fly due to their lower quality and less advanced features. While not always the case, cheaper drones may have less stable flight characteristics and less precise controls, which can make them more difficult to pilot.

What's your recommendation for a cheap one then, since you know so much and obviously have never even flown one?

That's not what I'm saying at all. I'm saying that other people with a variety of experience levels have different opinions.

Look you have a DJI and obviously it works for you. That's great and I'm glad you enjoy it. However, quite often when people hand out free advice on the internet, they frequently have a very narrow point of view (because most of us don't own more than 1 or 2 of anything of what folks are asking about) and we end up making recommendations to validate our own choices. Very often on sites like this one, you'll see folks hand out advice without trying to find out what the users end goal truly is. It's been my experience over the years that folks that are truly knowledgeable on a subject won't answer questions like the OP's right away. They'll query the individual to find our what they really want to do with it. For example, the OP said "Cheap", yet we have no idea based upon what the OP posted what their definition of "cheap" really is. Is that $50, $150, $1000? We have no idea. Until we have that information, none of us can truly answer the question.

With all that being said, I'll reiterate what I already said, that your original answer isn't wrong. I simply provided a different opinion/physiology from someone with vastly more knowledge and experience than either one of us...

and actually, I was considering building and programing my own drone... LINK

He didn't say cheap, he said beginner... with a camera.

Why would you buy a 100 dollar piece of crap that is going to be hard to fly and easy to crash when you could spend 100 dollars more and get a GREAT used drone that is much easier to fly, highly rated, tested, and has tons of dependable resources for the future?

Or spend 200 more and get a new one.

Cheap drones are just that, cheap...

And DJIs have become extremely affordable, especially if you buy used. You can even get insurance on used ones.

Nobody even talks about how easy the newest DJIs are to fly (cause they have been super easy to fly for years), it's all about camera upgrades and other features.

Anybody know anything about the Holy Stone HS700E . I won one last week and it’s being shipped and I know nothing about drones.

Wow! This post struck up an old memory.

Not asking for the specific source, but do you know a lot about the source where you won this? Are you sure it is a legitimate? I ask because I have a friend who lost a shipping fee plus had his credit card(s) "stolen" a few years after allegedly "winning" a drone. All he had to do was paying the shipping.....You know how that works, right.

Hopefully this isn't a similar thing happening again.

Nah not a similar situation. Won it at an industry conference last week from a vendor booth where there was a business card drawing

As someone who is FAA licensed and who has their own business and that flys ONLY DJI Drones, what NA said is spot on.

Their safety systems make it almost impossible to crash. I run into issues on almost every flight that involves some sort of close up shot. As long as the collision avoidance features are enabled, the drone physically will not let you hit something. I missed out on getting some shots for a client just last week for this exact reason and I'm having to reshoot because of it.

They are by far the easiest to learn on and the user interface is extremely user friendly. The control sensitivity can easily be adjusted as well to allow more forgiveness for new users.

I got my first drone (Phantom 3) in 2016 and was able to fly right out of the box with ease.

Disclaimer: I ONLY fly DJI for my business. I HAVE flown other cheaper ones. All I will say is you get what you pay for.
