Does an internal sata drive need wdws installed to view pix?

After formatting of course. Need a backup drive and these are cheap because of the popularity of the ssd's.

Not if you have another drive with Windows on it. You can install the second drive and Windows will recognize it, just like if it is an external HD. You can store all of the photos on the second drive and Windows can open them from the primary drive.
