I have no interest in buying smart devices that I can't use local-only. Besides my distaste for sending my data to and through the cloud, I would be furious if I paid a premium on something to make it "smart", only for the parent company to go under and my fancy crap becomes a premium brick. It's insanity. It's one thing to have local functionality with an optional (or "upsale") cloud connected version. It's another to become locked in and beholden to some company's whims and financial outlook.
On another note, has anyone tried playing with the Shelly light switch relays for converting regular switches into "smart" switches, while retaining the regular switch functions?

Yes I have but they are not easy to cram into gang boxes. I'd suggest looking into the Martin Jerry lightswiches that come pre-flashed with tasmota for local control.

Was a victim of Wink myself. Luckily all the bulbs and stuff still worked, but I've got 2 Wink bricks.
