which is why i linked you a cable, and told you how to make the master volume control the soundbar

You can configure the remote to link with the sound bar. It's in the cable box settings menu.

Press the Menu key on your remote, then choose "System Settings." Scroll down to the option labelled "Input Terminal Setting," and press the Enter key. Scroll down that menu until you come to the option labelled "Output Select." If you choose "Fixed," your TV speakers will keep working and be controlled by the TV remote. Your audio out will stay level, and must be controlled separately by the receiver's remote. If you choose "Variable," the TV's speakers will be muted and the Aquos remote will raise and lower volume through the audio output.

quote:yeah, i have a vizio soundbar and my DTV remote can control it. I just turned off my main tv speakers and used the menu options to control the soundbar. Having the tv speakers working in conjunction kinda fricked up the sound of my 5.1 surround sound setup.
ou could also always train your cable remote to the soundbar.

Assuming that's they have a cable box, they only want to use the cable remote. If you use the variable setting, you still have to use the tv remote.

Def turn off the tv speakers though like MJ says

I edited to include it.

soundbar is fed from an optical audio out port on the back of my TV.
That's how we run our bar.
Not to be a turd. Is the power pack plugged up? Do you get power on lights (probably right end of front of unit)?
I'd be most suspicious that the unit wasn't plugged into an audio out plug on the back of the set.

OK so I am hooked up optically to my soundbar. Does it matter what type of optical cable I have in order to control the volume like you previously mentioned?
Or am I just missing the setting on the TV to make it happen?

LG TV-50PA6500
I can look it up when I get home. I just didn't know if the cord mattered or a setting that I may or may not have.

Not to hijack the thread, but does anybody have issues with the delay timing always having to be changed while using a sound bar? I also had to use the main uverse box rather than any of the extended ones because running them through the sound bar either made the resolution wobbly or the sound cuts in and out depending on which box I used.

quote:cord does not matter. Any cord will work. You just have to access the settings in the television to make it function correctly.

I've got it hooked up using an RCA to 3.5mm cable hook up right now.
I did what you said about the variable sound and now the soundbar is controlled with the cable remote.
All is well.
Thanks everyone.
Optical Cable is on order to get an even better sound, but I'm just gonna get it delivered via amazon prime and save some dollars.
I thought about going to get it at the store for the Ohio State game Saturday night, but this seems to be working fine and is a exponential upgrade to what they had for the Michigan-OSU game (which prompted this in the first place

I truly appreciate all the input (pun intended) from everyone.

if you use digital optical for the soundbar the televisions volume control will also control the sound bars volume.
What did this mean then?

Sorry not trying to be an arse.
